Potato, Potahto

It's not a new topic, but I'm still intrigued by the differences in the way we pronounce words. How do you pronounce the following:

Grocery--
Gro-shery or Gro-sery?

Envelope--
In-velope or On-velope?

Mature--
Ma-chure or Ma-tour?

February--
Feb-you-ary or Feb-roo-ary?

Coupon--
Koo-pon or Kyoo-pon?

Due--
Doo or Dyoo?

Do you know anyone who's still hanging on to the "hw" sound, as in "hwat" (what) or "hwen" (when)?

What pronunciations really grate on your nerves?

Gro-shery, Ma-chure, Feb-you-ary, and Doo.

Also, according to my beloved grandmother, Momma Jo, it's en-VEL-up, as in "to surround."

In addition, I prefer "KYU-pin."

And finally, the one pronunciation that grates on my nerves is when people insert an "r" when pronouncing my last name -- "Warshburn." Happens more than you think...

Poinsetta: poinsett-ee-ah or poinsett-uh?
Jillians: jill-yins or jill-ee-ans

I also can't stand when people say "aks" instead of "ask." I mean, look at the order of the letters for crying out loud!

Oh my, what a great topic! I bet some pronunciations are based on regional dialects (e.g. the addition of an 'r' as in warsh).

I know my pronunciations can vary with the company I keep. I admit bowing to peer pressure but I prefer to think of it as not putting on airs.

Room: I've heard it pronounced rum.

Garage: Is the 'g' in hard or soft?

Harass: Which syllable is stressed? (media seem to prefer the first syllable)

I love it WHen people pronounce the initial consonent cluster of w-h!

Oh. p.s. I HATE KYU pon. Koo pon, koo pon, koo pon. Anything else sounds affected.

Can anyone give me an example of another word where a y is introduced before the 'ou' cluster?

PLEASE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You know what word I like? Kewpie. As in Kewpie doll. Kewpie is officially the funny word of the day.

Niche: nitch or neesh?

Salmon: I hate sal-mon! The L is silent.

I know this isn't English, but it also makes me laugh when people who don't know anything about Spanish try to pronounce things at the Mexican restaurant. Tortillas- Tor-tiyas, not tor-tillas. The same with quesadillas.
